La loro trincea è fatta di aule cadenti, di fotocopiatrici scassate, di bagni senza sapone, di bimbi che nello zainetto oltre al panino si portano la carta igienica, di caldaie a secco, di computer rotti, di laboratori in pezzi, di allievi abbandonati a se stessi perché la cassa è vuota e la supplente non c'è. Sono cronache da una bancarotta quelle che i dirigenti scolastici italiani raccontano, da scuole che sembrano fortini assediati dall'emergenza, mentre il ministero eroga "zero euro" per il funzionamento ordinario degli istituti, e le famiglie si tassano per affrontare, almeno, la quotidianità.
Dopo le 41 mila lettere inviate da 300 presidi del Lazio ai genitori dei loro alunni "per denunciare la grave situazione finanziaria della scuola", e la durissima risposta del ministro dell'Istruzione Gelmini ("chi non sa dirigere cambi mestiere"), i capi d'istituto si organizzano, replicano, provano a difendere l'orgoglio di un ruolo un tempo illustre, rispettato, riconosciuto.
